Razz Poker is a variation of seven card stud, but a big difference between the two games is that the winning hand is either the lowest or the worst hand takes home the pot, and “the eight or better rule” that is observed in many poker games does not apply. The lowest hand in Razz is the “wheel” or “bike,” which is the Ace through five cards. Flushes and straights do not count in Razz.

Playing Razz Poker
Up to eight different players can play at the Razz poker table. Each game of Razz will consist of five betting rounds, which does not include the ante. The game will begin after the ante, and each player will receive two cards dealt to them facing down and one card, “the door” dealt facing up. After the three first cards are in play, the final four cards are played as follows: The fourth card is dealt facing up, and the second round of bets can be played. The fifth card is dealt to the players face up, and betting now is capped at the max limit of the table. The sixth card is also dealt facing up on the table, and another round of betting is allowed. The final card, the seventh, is dealt face down, and the last round of betting takes place for the game. The player with the highest door (in case of a tie, the highest door will use suits spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs in that order) must place a bet of half of the lower limit, which is called “bring in.” Once “the bring” in has been bet, players may now have an option to bet either the lower limit or half of the lower limit throughout game play. For example, if the players are at a / table, the player that has the highest “door” card must make a bet of or . Once the initial round of betting has taken place, each round thereafter, the betting will start with the player who has the lowest hand that is shown on the table.

Betting In Razz Poker
In the example listed above for a / table, the first two rounds are set at the value, which means that all raises and bets for the first two rounds will be capped at . The cap for raises and bets will take place for the last three rounds of Razz play. Each round of play is referred to as a street – be it “First Street, Second Street, etc,” and the last round of play is called the “river”. The maximum permitted number of bets during any round is four.

The Showdown In Razz Poker
During the Showdown portion of Razz poker play, if more than two or more players are left, players will display their hands and the pot will be given to the player that is holding the lowest hand. The player who bets last during the Showdown will be the first player to reveal their hand. From that player, all cards are revealed going in a clockwise direction on the Razz table.

7 card stud hilo and Razz poker are the least popular amongst the big 5 poker games. At the major rooms like Stars and Tilt though there are thousands of players at the Stud HL and Razz tables. These two games require a lot of skill, especially Razz poker. If you are interested in learning how to dominate the ring tables for these two games you will have to study. I have added some links below that will be helpful:

Most of us have experience playing 7 card Stud poker so you should at least know that basic format of these games. The objectives differ only slightly but that makes all the difference in the world. In Stud Hilo you want the highest hand and/or the lowest hand, just like in Omaha Hilo. To qualify for the low hand in Stud Hilo your hand must be 8 or less.

Razz poker on the other hand is a true lowball game. The player with the lowest hand wins. It doesn’t matter if I have quad Aces, if you have a Royal flush I will win. There is no requirement for the low and straights and flushes do not count.

Article Content:
A winning 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo Strategy is much more complex than your standard poker game strategy. Because of the way 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo often awards a split pot to two hand winners, combined with the complicated nature of Hand Development in the Low Hand, you’ll need to concentrate on several aspects of the game to apply a good 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo strategy.

For this 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo strategy, we’ll be covering some of the most important aspects of the game that will ensure minimal losses and maximum profits on the felt.

7 Card Stud Hi-Lo Strategy – Scoop the Pot
In a normal poker game, simply winning can bring in a nice profit. In 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo, however, you may be winning only half of the pot, which isn’t nearly as profitable, and, in some cases, may leave you breaking even. If you want to make a worthy profit from 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo, your ultimate goal should be to scoop the pot.

Scooping the pot means winning both the High and Low Hand; or winning the High Hand when there is no qualifying Low Hand at the table. Winning both High and Low hands will require an excellent hand. Something like A-2-3-4-5-*-* would be perfect, as the Straight hits the High Hand and A-2-3-4-5 is the best possible Low Hand in 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo.

Another great hand would be something like A-A-A-2-4-5-7. The last four cards don’t have to be exact, so long as they are all 8 or below without pairing. A-A-2-3-5-5-7 would be good as well, with two pair, Aces and Fives, plus the Qualifying Low Hand.

The second option – having no Qualifying Low Hand at the table – requires a very strong High Hand, of course. If you observe the board, you can easily determine that there is no Low Hand coming if all players are showing at least 3 cards of 9 or higher, or two cards 9 or higher and a pair (9-J-K, 9-Q-Q, etc.)

7 Card Stud Hi-Lo Strategy – High Hand First
Many novice 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo players simply don’t realize how valuable the High Hand is. Being dealt a good Low Starting Hand is not enough to move forward with. A hand like 2-3-5 should be Folded immediately. Why? Because it has absolutely no High Hand potential, and the chance of qualifying for the Low Hand is too slim to risk money on.

The Low Hand requires 5 cards of 8 and below with no pairs. You only have 7 cards coming. The odds are stacked against you. Yes, qualifying Low Hands do happen, but without a High Hand to work on, you are likely siphoning chips into a losing pot.

You must at least win the High Hand to ensure minimum losses and maximum profits – the key element to a 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo strategy (or any poker strategy for that matter).

7 Card Stud Hi-Lo Strategy – Door Cards Prevail
In the earliest stages of a 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo hand, the Door Card is the most influential aspect of the game. For instance, if you have a terrible hand, but an Ace in the Door Card position, you will appear very strong against your opponents – especially if they are all showing cards between 6 and J. Placing a good size bet or raise will incite a Fold from most players, allowing you to steal the Antes with a junk hand.

The same works in reverse with a bad Door Card. If your Hole Cards are great, like Pocket Queens, Kings or Aces, your 9 Door Card is a great way to keep your opponents dropping chips into the pot. They assume you are weak, giving you a perfect opportunity to control the pot. Check down from early position, Call from other positions, keeping as many players as possible in the pot.

———————
